Georgia Electric Bike Laws

Three-class law · State parks: Varies by park

House Bill 454 (2019) adopted the three-class system for electric assisted bicycles with motors of 750 watts or less (O.C.G.A. 40-1-1 and 40-6-300 to 40-6-303). E-bikes need no license, registration or insurance. Class 3 riders must be 15 or older and every Class 3 rider and passenger must wear a helmet; bicycle riders under 16 must wear a helmet on any bike.

City rules

What Cities and Counties Can Change

Local authorities and state agencies may ban Class 1 and 2 e-bikes from paths, may open paths to Class 3, and decide which devices use natural-surface trails. State law does not define stand-up e-scooters, so cities such as Atlanta regulate them by ordinance.

Parks and trails

State Parks, Federal Lands and Rail Trails in Georgia

Georgia law lets the agency that manages a path or natural-surface trail regulate e-bikes on it, including the Georgia Department of Natural Resources in state parks. Secondary sources report Class 1 e-bikes allowed on park roads and trails open to bicycles; no official Georgia State Parks policy page was found.
