What a folding e-bike is
A Bike That Packs Down
A folding e-bike solves storage and the last mile: it rides to the station, folds for the train and rides on at the other end, or lives in an apartment or a car trunk. The fold, the folded size and the weight matter as much as the motor.
The type spans very different bikes. The London-built Brompton folds to a small package and is carried every day; US fat-tire folders such as the Lectric XP4 fold mainly to fit in a car or RV; Tern in Taiwan builds mid-drive folders on Bosch systems.
Chinese makers, Fiido among them, sell light, low-priced folders direct to consumers in Europe and the US, and Gocycle in the UK builds a fold-flat design with a front hub motor.

Drive and equipment
Hub Motors Keep the Fold Simple
Most folders use a hub motor because it leaves the folding bottom bracket area free. Brompton moved its electric line to its own e-Motiq rear hub; Gocycle uses its own front hub; Lectric and Fiido use rear hubs. Tern's Vektron is the main mid-drive folder, with a Bosch motor.
Battery size is a trade-off against carrying weight. Brompton mounts the battery in a bag on the front block so the bike can be carried without it; fat-tire folders carry large packs in the frame. See Drive Systems and Batteries & Safety.
Rules and standards
E-Bike Rules Apply; Transit Operators Set Carry Rules
In the US a folding e-bike is a Class 1, 2 or 3 e-bike under state law. Transit agencies set their own rules for carrying e-bikes on trains and buses, and many allow folded bikes when full-size bikes are not allowed. New York City has required UL 2849 certification for e-bikes sold or rented in the city since 2023.
In the EU a folding pedelec is held to 250 W and 25 km/h under EN 15194. See e-bike laws by state.
