Cargo E-Bikes

Compact · longtail · front-loader · cargo trike · four-wheel

A cargo e-bike is a bicycle built to carry children or freight, with a frame, brakes and motor rated for a total weight of about 190 to 250 kg. It is still an e-bike in law: the same 750 W and 20 or 28 mph limits apply in the US, and the same 250 W and 25 km/h limits in the EU, whatever the bike weighs loaded.

What a cargo e-bike is

A Bicycle Built Around the Load

A cargo e-bike replaces short car trips: the school run, the grocery run, a trades call or a parcel round. The frame puts the load low and close to the wheels, and the motor makes a 100 kg payload ride like an ordinary bike.

The electric motor is what made the format practical outside flat Dutch and Danish cities. An unpowered Danish front-loader with two children aboard is hard work on any hill; the same bike with a Bosch mid-drive climbs at walking-plus speed with normal pedaling effort. Buyers range from families to delivery fleets, tradespeople and city services.

Every cargo e-bike is built to a stated gross weight: bike, battery, rider and load together. Urban Arrow rates the Family at 250 kg total. The rating sets the frame, wheels, brakes and kickstand, and it is the number to compare between bikes rather than the box size.

Motor and load

Mid-Drives With Cargo Tuning Carry the Weight

Most cargo e-bikes use a mid-drive, because it drives the rear wheel through the gears and keeps its torque on a loaded hill start. Bosch dominates the segment with its Cargo Line motor, rated at 85 Nm and tuned to deliver full assist from a standstill. Shimano EP801 and Yamaha PW-X3 units appear on many European models, and Enviolo or Shimano Nexus hub gears are common because they shift at a stop.

Lower-priced longtails such as the Rad Power Bikes RadWagon use a geared rear hub motor and a throttle, which makes them Class 2 bikes in the US. Hub drives cost less and need less chain maintenance, but they lose efficiency on long climbs under a full load.

Batteries are larger than on commuter bikes: 545 to 1,000 Wh is typical, and many front-loaders take two packs. Range falls fast with load, so a bike rated at 60 miles empty may do half that with two children on a hilly route. See the range calculator.

Rules and standards

E-Bike Law Applies; a Cargo Standard Covers the Frame

US law has no separate cargo class. A cargo e-bike under 750 W is a Class 1, 2 or 3 e-bike, and the same state rules on helmets, age and paths apply; a few states and cities add passenger rules for carrying children. In the EU a cargo pedelec is held to 250 W and 25 km/h like any other; four-wheel delivery models above those limits are L-category vehicles.

The frame and brakes have their own test standard. Germany's DIN 79010, published in 2020, was the first cargo bike standard, and it became the core of the European EN 17860 series. EN 17860 covers two-wheel and multi-track cargo bikes up to 300 kg, heavy multi-track bikes up to 650 kg, electrical aspects, passenger transport and trailers, and it doubles the fatigue test for commercial use. Battery packs are tested to UL 2849 in the US; see Batteries & Safety.
